Yu-Ying Fu Li(1916-1969)
Dr. Li, of the Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, Georgia, is a recently deceased member of the Iowa Academy of Science.
Dr. Li was born in Chekiang, China, on May 28, 1916. She received her B.S. degree in Biology from the National Chekiang University in 1938. She received the M.S. in 1950 and the Ph.D. in 1955 from the University of Iowa.
Before her marriage to Dr. Kuang-Chiu Li in 1957, Miss Fu was a graduate student in Zoology at the University of Iowa. She began her studies in General Physiology under the late Professor J. H. Bodine. After his death, Dr. Fu completed her thesis under the direction of Professor Gordon Marsh.
She was then appointed as a Research Associate in the Radiation Research Laboratory of the College of Medicine in 1955. Work Dr. Li did that would be of interest to members of the Radiation Research Society is cited in part in Volume 5, p. 477, 1956, and in Volume 7, p. 314, 1957, of this journal. These studies had to do with the relative effectiveness of fast neutrons on embryos of the grasshopper; and effects of whole body irradiation of the mouse on thyroid function.
She joined the Center for Disease Control, in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1963, and was engaged in antibody research. For the past three years, she had been conducting research on the biochemistry of fungi. She had previously been engaged in tissue culture study at Indiana University, research on nucleic acids and protein at the University of Miami, and radiation research at the University of Iowa.
She was a member of the Society of Sigma Xi, Iowa Academy of Science, The Radiation Research Society, New York Academy of Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of Zoologists, International Society for Human and Animal Mycology, and American Society for Microbiology.
Dr. Li passed away on December 14, 1969, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Li is survived by her husband, Dr. Kuang Chiu Li; a daughter, Miss Charlene Li; and a son, Konrad Li.
